EPDM Flat Roofing
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, also known as EPDM, can be simply defined as a synthetic rubber roof. Like any other roofing product, it has pros and cons associated with it. As a commercial roofer offering many types of roofing materials, Larry Walty Roofing & Guttering Inc. offers EPDM roofing for many applications.
Why Choose EPDM
Perhaps the biggest reason many building owners choose EPDM is its relatively inexpensive cost. When compared to other flat roofing materials, it’s among the least expensive both as far as material and installation. EPDM is extremely lightweight so rarely, if ever, do roofs need any sort of reinforcement prior to your commercial roofer installing it. And, because it has been around a long time, we know that EPDM will last for around 20 years with proper maintenance.
We sell and install the entire line of Versigard® EPDM products from Versico Roofing Systems and can help you choose the right option for your building. No matter who installed your original roof, as a full-service commercial roofer, we also offer repair and maintenance.
Why EPDM May Not Be a Good Choice
Because EPDM is made from a combination of recycled tires, sawdust and slate dust, it’s not the most attractive roofing material. Unless you purchase an upgraded product that has been lightened, it will be black or dark in color – which can lead to increased cooling costs. And because it’s a rubber-like material, EPDM punctures more easily than some other roofing products – so it’s not a good choice for a roof with significant foot traffic.
